Water is therapeutic

2014-07-19 14.49.18Do you swim? Spend time in or by the water? I have long felt that being near running water and hearing its sounds for several hours at a time can be deeply nourishing. That could be a tiny creek that runs over a few boulders- I am told there need to be air bubbles to make sound, to the ocean.

Being in the water can also be very helpful. A woman I know goes to the pool on the days it is warmer and just floats. Many therapeutic and regular pools offer water aerobics or Ai Chi- basically a type of Chi Gong that is done in a pool (check here for some great information on movements to do in the water). Easter Seals maintains warm pools in many areas, that may offer one or both of these.

If you cannot swim as you once did, allow yourself to explore other ways to be in water. I have spent hours wading in a shallow river or walking along the ocean. In a pool or lake you can stand or walk in shoulder deep water and move your arms gently, just to feel good. Doing a gentle stretching routine in or at the edge of the pool works great. Water is so helpful by reducing weight, but also offering some resistance to our usual movements. Try stretching in the hot tub, most public pools have one these days.

Being in the water offers a great opportunity to move differently, to slow down, and really explore how a movement feels, what is involved, what feels best. Enjoy watching as well, ripples, sunlight/lights shining into/through the water, distortions, colors. If you have a swim practice, stop and do something different. If you have not read the book review of Move into Life, there are a number of other tips that are applicable here.

Are you concerned you will look silly? Don’t. You won’t be the only one doing their therapeutic thing. Water therapy is well respected and common. And smart.

Here is a wonderful website to enjoy water and amazing stone creations in photos and video called Gravity Glue. ENJOY!
